THE ARMAS TRASMEDITERRÁNEA GROUP IS THE FIRST #PLASTICFREE SHIPPING LINE IN SPAIN

23/02/2024

Las Palmas de Gran Canaria, 2 November 2023.

It was four years ago when Naviera Armas Trasmediterránea began the project that made it the first #PlasticFree shipping line. It happened at Fitur 2019, at the presentation of the company’s stand located in hall 10, which also contained zero plastic in its construction, finished in natural wood from sustainable agroforestry plantations, with a 100% ecological jute floor.

With the #PlasticFree project, the first phase of which has already been implemented, a series of measures have been put in place to eliminate the consumption of single-use plastics on all its ships, marine terminals and offices. In 2022 alone, they eliminated 5.1 million single-use plastics. They have also compensated for the consumption of those that cannot be removed via partnership with associations and NGOs that work to increase awareness and promote protection of the environment through plastic collection and marine fauna protection initiatives.

This project has turned the Naviera Armas-Trasmediterránea Group into an eco-friendly brand that meets four of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) promoted by the United Nations through the Development Programme. In particular, the Group has launched several initiatives intended to meet the SDGs for responsible production and consumption, climate action, underwater life and terrestrial ecosystem.

With the launch of the #PlasticFree project, the Naviera Armas Trasmediterranea Group is working to continue providing its services in a sustainable manner and is helping to raise awareness among its customers and travellers regarding the importance of reducing plastic consumption and committing to recycling.

In the first phase, all single-use plastic material used in catering (bars, restaurants and vending machines), shops (bags and packaging) and cabins (amenities) has been replaced with other sustainable wood and disposable, biodegradable or compostable material, and recycling stations have been installed on each ship.

In the second phase, The Armas Trasmediterránea Group extended its #PlasticFree commitment to all its non-single-use plastic and to the entire chain of suppliers, awarding those that also eliminate plastic. It also performs audits and has created its own seal, among other initiatives.
