REDUCING THE CARBON FOOTPRINT
NAVIERA ARMAS TRASMEDITERRÁNEA, A FIRM COMMITMENT TO SUSTAINABILITY AND LOOKING AFTER THE ENVIRONMENT.
IS SHIPPING REALLY THAT POLLUTING?
Maritime transport accounts for around 90% of international trade, as boats are the most efficient method when it comes to CO2 per ton and mile, much less than that of air or road transport. Even so, work is being done to make it a more economically, socially and environmentally sustainable sector.
WHAT ARE WE DOING?
Among the measures adopted by Naviera ARMAS TRASMEDITERRÁNEA to reduce the environmental impact of its activity are:
Improved propulsion system for the freighter Villa de Tazacorte.
The propulsion system of our boats has been updated, installing the new Promas Lite system, developed by Rolls-Royce. This system consists of an appendage attached to the rudder and a hydrodynamic fairing on the propeller hub that appropriately directs the wake and improves hydrodynamic drag.
The design of the propeller blades has also been optimised, adapting them to the new Promas Lite system and improving the efficiency of propulsion even further.
The result is an increase in the propeller thrust and a decrease in drag, improving the ship's energy consumption during the voyage.
The installation of this system guarantees a saving of around 12% in fuel consumption.
Paint with fluoropolymers on our vessels.
In line with our commitment to reduce CO2, Naviera Armas Trasmediterránea has, since 2011, undertaken an ambitious project to reduce the drag of ships in the water. Fluoropolymer paints are up to 60% smoother than conventional paints, creating less hydrodynamic drag on ship movement. This measure has shown reductions of around 6% in energy consumption, CO2 emissions and fuel costs are achievable.
Hydrodynamic improvement studies.
With the aim of reducing fuel consumption per mile even further, hydrodynamic improvements are being worked on to improve efficiency.
Project Scrubber
Installation of SCRUBBERS, a system that purifies air pollution by removing particles and gases from chimneys and ducts. This system has already been installed in the ships Villa de Tazacorte and Ciudad de Valencia.
Reduction in energy consumption.
Reduction in the consumption of electricity in offices and branches, as well as on ships, substituting lighting for LED lights and installing Cold Ironing on boats once they have docked in port.
The Cold Ironing system allows the auxiliary systems to be switched off and essential onboard services to be maintained with the flow of electricity from the shore, significantly reducing noise pollution.
ELECTRICAL CONNECTION IN SS DE LA GOMERA
Shore-ship in the port of San Sebastián de La Gomera -known as COLD IRONING in which the correct coupling of the electrical power supply from land to the ferry "Volcán de Taburiente" has been verified.
ELECTRICAL CONNECTION IN SC DE LA PALMA
The “Volcán de Taburiente”, has also been successfully connected in La Palma, an island where the ship docks each night and disconnects the engines as electrical supply is provided via this system.
ELECTRICAL CONNECTION IN ALMERIA
The ferry “Ciudad de Ibiza”, is connected to the Puerto de Almería electrical network, avoiding the use of auxiliary engines and significantly reducing noise pollution and emissions.
ELECTRICAL CONNECTION IN SC DE TENERIFE
In Tenerife the Volcán de Tagoro will be connected. Work is underway to connect the vessel to the port of Santa Cruz de Tenerife in the near future.
