International Women’s Day in the Maritime Sector

MARIA ELENA HERNÁNDEZ PÉREZ

PASSENGER ASSISTANT. VOLCÁN DE TAIDIA.

‘For years I had imagined with curiosity what it would be like on board a ship, until I completed my training and became a passenger assistant. What I most appreciate is being able to work near the sea surrounded by a great team’.

What was it like starting at Naviera Armas Trasmediterránea?

I started in 2014 but not directly on board, as I was part of the land crew, managing passenger access. I then became curious about what it would be like to work on board a ship, so in 2019 I finally decided to train for the onboard role of Passenger Assistant. Once I completed the training, I worked on the Volcán del Teide vessel for a year and a half, on the route to Huelva. I then had the opportunity to work aboard other ships, such as the Volcán de Tagoro and the Volcán de Taidia (which is where I am to this day).

What do you most appreciate about working for Naviera Armas Trasmediterránea?

What I most appreciate about being a part of Naviera Armas Trasmediterránea is being near the sea, which is where I feel the happiest. I also work alongside a great team of people and learn new things each day as I try to get better at my job.

MARIA AMPARO DENIZ HERNÁNDEZ

Maria Amparo

What was it like starting at Naviera Armas Trasmediterránea?

I started in 2001 as a hostess, working on different vessels, even sailing the company’s route connecting the Canary Islands with Madeira (Portugal). The early days are always challenging, until you get used to the sector. But bit by bit I found my place, and here I am today. After years of experience, I was given the opportunity to fill the role of Purser, a position that I took on with great responsibility and enthusiasm.

What do you most appreciate about working for Naviera Armas Trasmediterránea?

What I value most about working for Naviera Armas Trasmediterránea are my colleagues, as they are a great source of support during journeys. I love the maritime world and working for a shipping line has shown me how much I enjoy this sector.

CANDELARIA MARRERO MAZZUCCO

‘It’s a position that I would choose again; living on board is very exciting, with so many different experiences and learning opportunities. As an Officer, I have always felt very supported by my colleagues, like one of the team’.

Candelaria

What was it like starting at Naviera Armas Trasmediterránea?

My career began in 2019 when I started work on board as a deck trainee. Although it wasn’t initially a career I had thought about following, I became more and more interested as I looked into it, and I would choose it again. I don’t regret anything and believe that it was the best choice. Life on board is very exciting, with so many different experiences and learning opportunities.

What do you most appreciate about working for Naviera Armas Trasmediterránea?

What I most value about working for Naviera Armas Trasmediterránea is always feeling supported by my colleagues, like one of the team. It has given me the opportunity to grow professionally. I started as a trainee, then went on to become third mate and now I’m second deck officer. The company believes in us and wants us to succeed. I would therefore recommend that trainees work on board with us; if their training period goes well, they may come back again as officers.

SINDIA SAN GINÉS HERRERA

COORDINATOR. VOLCÁN DE TAGORO.

‘My family’s connection with the maritime sector is what led me to choose this profession. I was able to grow professionally until I obtained the position of Coordinator. I believe that it’s the crew that makes a ship, and that translates to life on board and relationships between shipmates, which become friendships’.

What was it like starting at Naviera Armas Trasmediterránea?

I began in 2020 as a back-up passenger assistant, initially on conventional ships and then later on high-speed routes. The company gave me the opportunity to grow professionally and I now hold the position of Coordinator on the Volcán de Tagoro, a post that I took on with great responsibility. My family’s connection with the maritime sector is what led me to choose this profession, and I have always been fascinated by the sea as well.

What do you most appreciate about working for Naviera Armas Trasmediterránea?

What I most appreciate about working for Naviera Armas Trasmediterránea is the opportunity to grow professionally and always being surrounded by a great team of colleagues, who have all taught me a lot. Some of my colleagues have become true friends as when we are onboard, we share many experiences together. I believe that it’s the crew that makes a ship and this makes life on board much more positive. Of course I would recommend working in the maritime sector.
